A 45-year-old woman with severe intellectual disability from childhood meningoencephalitis, spina bifida, epilepsy and blindness died from complications of end-stage renal disease. She was diagnosed with renal disease in May 2010 and managed conservatively with palliative care referral in November 2010. After presenting with acute respiratory distress in February 2011, she was admitted in March 2011 with aspiration pneumonia, fluid overload and pulmonary oedema. Palliative care was initiated and she died shortly after. The coroner found no suspicious circumstances, no issues with her care, and no relationship between her custodial/care status and the cause of death.
