Redae Berhane, a 23-year-old man with schizophrenia, severe stutter, and partial deafness, went missing on 6 August 2007 and has not been located despite extensive investigation. He had multiple psychiatric hospitalizations (2004, 2006, 2007) and was under community treatment order. His treating mental health team noted he had poor insight into his illness, medication non-compliance, and considerable difficulty functioning independently without support. His case manager expressed concern that without medication he would become disorganized, paranoid, restrict food/fluid intake, and be unlikely to seek help. Despite comprehensive police investigations, hospital checks, bank records, Centrelink searches, and international liaison, no conclusive evidence of his whereabouts or death exists. His vulnerability to relapse, social isolation, and inability to maintain himself in the community without assistance make this a tragic outcome highlighting gaps in community mental health follow-up and the challenges of engaging non-compliant patients with psychotic illness.
