A 63-year-old male prisoner died from metastatic small cell lung cancer with adenocarcinoma features. Cancer was incidentally discovered during investigation of a deep vein thrombosis in October 2018, leading to one month of treatment at Royal Adelaide Hospital with palliative chemotherapy before return to prison. The coroner found Mr Keirl received appropriate medical care during custody, including regular nursing reviews, weekly medical officer assessment, and multiple hospital transfers for deteriorating conditions. His death resulted from advanced metastatic disease rather than any deficiency in prison healthcare. No preventable factors were identified, and the coroner made no recommendations.
