Rupert Kaine Rafferty, a 5-year-old boy, died from fulminant pneumococcal meningitis (serotype 29) on 23 April 2010. He was examined by his paediatrician on 19 April with upper respiratory symptoms and appeared well with no concerning signs. Over the following days, he developed vomiting, photophobia, and fever but seemed to improve on the morning of 23 April. That evening, he deteriorated rapidly with respiratory distress and became unconscious and pulseless within hours. The coroner found no criticism of his clinical management, emphasizing that pneumococcal meningitis can progress fatally within hours despite appearing benign initially. The serotype involved was not covered by available vaccines. The coroner recommended public health awareness campaigns about meningitis symptoms and inquiry into pneumococcal vaccination strategies.
