Wayne Thomas Jamieson, a 56-year-old man with profound intellectual disability and Osteogerma Dysblastica, died from aspiration pneumonia complicated by myocardial infarction and right heart failure. He was admitted to hospital on 1 October 2023 with difficulty swallowing and suspected aspiration pneumonia. Despite antibiotics, dietician input, and nursing support, his condition deteriorated. He developed electrolyte abnormalities, hypoglycaemia, and fluid overload requiring multiple MET calls. On 10 October, a transition to palliative care was made. The coroner found no concerns regarding the quality of care provided and concluded the death was from natural causes. The case highlights challenges in managing aspiration risk in patients with severe intellectual disability and dysphagia.
