Finding into death of Gary Jason Cramer

Gary Cramer, a 44-year-old man with cerebral palsy and intellectual disability, was admitted to Monash Medical Centre with hypotension, productive cough, and bibasal crepitations. He deteriorated rapidly with severe hypoxaemia (77% on 16L O2) and was transferred to ICU where he was started on intravenous antibiotics and non-invasive ventilation. A nasopharyngeal aspirate confirmed Influenza B. After discussion with family, a decision was made against intubation, CPR, or inotropes. He received palliative care and died on 15 October 2013. The coroner found the medical management and care provided by the hospital and residential service was reasonable and appropriate in the circumstances.
