Wesley Fitton, aged 50, died from tracheal obstruction caused by metastatic epithelioid sarcoma while in custody at Princess Alexandra Hospital's secure unit. Diagnosed in June 2014 with aggressive, rapidly progressive cancer involving extensive mediastinal and cervical lymph node involvement, he underwent palliative radiotherapy and multiple chemotherapy regimens without response. The tumour was deemed unsuitable for curative surgical intervention. Clinical review by the Queensland Health Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit found no concerns with medical management at either the correctional centre or hospital. The coroner confirmed appropriate investigations, specialist consultations, timely emergency management, and respect for the patient's autonomous decisions regarding treatment. The six-week delay in obtaining a CT scan in 2015 did not impact the ultimate outcome. Medical care met community standards and the death could not have been reasonably prevented.
