Snezana Stojanovska, 26, died from asphyxia due to manual neck strangulation on 27 November 2010. The death was initially misrepresented as a weightlifting accident involving a barbell entrapment. Forensic pathology revealed multiple bruises to the jaw, cheeks, ears and neck inconsistent with simple barbell compression but consistent with manual strangulation. Expert sports science evidence demonstrated that a barbell without collars would be extremely unlikely to come to rest horizontally across the neck. The initial police response inadequately investigated the circumstances, with homicide investigation delayed until forensic findings contradicted the accident narrative. No charges were laid despite evidence indicating one of three household members was responsible.
