Inquest into the death of Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith, aged 66, died in Long Bay Hospital while in custody serving a 17-year sentence for domestic violence and attempted murder. He had myelofibrosis with leukaemic transformation, emphysema, anaemia, and a congenital absent left kidney. After presenting to Prince of Wales Hospital with chest pain in August 2015, he was informed he had weeks to months to live. He was transferred to palliative care at Long Bay Hospital on 9 September and died on 11 September 2015. A thorough investigation concluded his care and treatment were appropriate and he died of natural causes with no suspicious circumstances. The coroner found no deficiencies in the medical or custodial management during his final days.
