An 82-year-old woman died from haemorrhage following a compound fracture to her left ankle sustained in a fall down stairs at her home on 24 May 2006, the same day she underwent a fluorescein angiogram for macular degeneration. The coroner's investigation examined whether the eye procedure contributed to the fall. Expert ophthalmological evidence confirmed the procedure was appropriate, performed to best practice standards, and would not have caused vision impairment post-procedure. The fall's cause could not be definitively established, though the deceased's underlying cardiac disease may have caused an arrhythmia. Her predisposition to fractures due to osteoporosis and Paget's disease contributed to the severity of injury. The coroner found no evidence that the fluorescein angiogram caused or contributed to the death, and no systemic issues requiring recommendations.
