Inquest into the Suspected Death of Wilfred Arthur BARRETT

Wilfred Arthur Barrett, an 81-year-old recluse, disappeared in May 1984 from Mount Monger, Western Australia. In the months preceding his disappearance, he was found wandering confused and disoriented on at least two occasions. Following one such incident, he was hospitalized in a severely frail and deconditioned state but discharged himself. Despite intensive search efforts by police and station hands using motorcycles over four days, no trace of Mr. Barrett was ever found. The coroner concluded he died in early May 1984, likely from natural causes, exhaustion, or accidental fall into a mineshaft while prospecting in bush terrain. His body was never recovered due to the harsh environment and scavenger wildlife. The coroner made an open finding as to cause and manner of death.
