Wayne Barry Matschoss, a 60-year-old man with significant medical comorbidities including cardiac disease, epilepsy, chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis, died in custody at Rockhampton Base Hospital from bronchopneumonia secondary to cerebral haemorrhage. He presented with pneumonia on 12 October 2004 and despite aggressive ICU management including intubation, ventilation, tracheostomy, and vasopressor support, his condition progressively deteriorated. The coroner found that correctional services and hospital staff provided appropriate care and treatment, with no failures in medical management. No preventive recommendations were made as the death was from natural causes in a patient with multiple severe chronic conditions, and nothing could have altered the outcome.
