Brendon Lahrs, a 27-year-old prisoner, died from metastatic Ewing's sarcoma (CIC-DUX4 translocation type) in March 2017. He presented with a persistent cough in April 2016 and was initially managed with Ventolin for suspected asthma. Although he delayed returning for review until May, this did not alter the outcome. Upon investigation, he was diagnosed with aggressive terminal cancer and received appropriate first-line chemotherapy followed by palliative radiotherapy. Clinical review found no deficiencies in medical care provided by prison health services or the Princess Alexandra Hospital. The disease was refractory to treatment with progressive spread despite standard oncological management. His death was unavoidable and natural causes with no preventable factors identified.
