Thomas Edward Schwartz, a 64-year-old prisoner, died from end-stage liver disease due to Hepatitis C and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He was transferred from Wolston Correctional Centre to Princess Alexandra Hospital on 4 December 2021 and died on 26 December 2021. The coroner found he received appropriate, timely medical care including specialist gastroenterology input, regular reviews, and palliative management. His complex liver disease was managed by specialist teams with frequent hospital admissions over two years. An Acute Resuscitation Plan was established reflecting his wishes. The coroner concluded the death was from natural causes with no preventable factors, no suspicious circumstances, and appropriate standard of care equivalent to community standards.
