A 21-year-old motorcyclist died from multiple injuries sustained in a single-vehicle collision on an urban freeway off-ramp. He was riding an unregistered 1000cc motorcycle that breached his learner licence conditions (restricted to <660cc). He was travelling at excessive speed (minimum 74-87.9 kph in an 80 kph zone with 50 kph advisory signs) on a right-hand bend and failed to negotiate the curve, colliding with a concrete barrier and falling onto the roadway below. Contributing factors included inexperience as a rider, excessive motorcycle power, and excessive speed. Toxicology revealed anabolic steroid use, but the coroner found no evidence this contributed to the fatal collision. The coroner noted the barrier height (1.15m) was problematic from public safety perspective, particularly given multiple similar collisions at this location.
