Andrew Emerton, a 43-year-old prisoner with a history of substance abuse and psychiatric treatment, collapsed after vigorous exercise in custody. He called for help reporting shortness of breath and was found unconscious within minutes. Despite immediate CPR by correctional officers and paramedics, he could not be revived. Autopsy revealed severe coronary atherosclerosis as the cause of death. The coroner found the death was not preventable and the emergency response was timely and appropriate. Medical care provided during his incarceration met appropriate standards. No clinical errors or omissions were identified as contributing to the outcome.
