Inquest into the deaths of Mary Louise NELSON and Rowan NELSON

Two people died in a motor vehicle collision on the Pacific Motorway on 15 January 2020. Rowan Nelson (22 years old) was driving a Toyota Yaris with his mother Louise (53 years old) as a passenger when the vehicle crossed the median and collided head-on with a semi-trailer. Both died from multiple injuries. Rowan had a history of mental health issues including a serious suicide attempt in December 2019, but evidence at the time of the collision indicated improvement: he was compliant with antidepressant medication, showed no signs of deterioration, had no reported suicidal ideation, and was supported by family. The coroner found the collision was accidental (misadventure) rather than deliberate, noting there was no definitive physical evidence of intentional steering, no evidence of braking or evasive action, and noting Rowan's awareness of his mother's presence would make deliberate collision unlikely.
