Inquest into the death of Damien Hughes

Damien Hughes, a 28-year-old Aboriginal man serving a prison sentence, died from bronchopneumonia caused by metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. He presented with a two-week history of chest swelling in April 2012 and was promptly investigated, diagnosed, and treated. The coroner found no basis for earlier diagnosis; prior symptoms (shoulder pain, cough) were clinically consistent with musculoskeletal injury or minor illness rather than malignancy. This aggressive, rapidly progressive cancer is extremely rare in young adults. Palliative care was exemplary, with appropriate pain management including opioids at therapeutic levels. The coroner commended all medical staff involved and made no criticisms of care or management. The sole recommendation addressed smoking prevention in Aboriginal communities.
