Inquest into the death of Desmond George Buckby

Desmond George Buckby, a 74-year-old prisoner detained under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act, suffered a massive left cerebral ischaemic stroke caused by cardioembolism while in Wolston Correctional Centre on 24 August 2022. He had significant risk factors including hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and Alzheimer's dementia. Despite repeated clinical advice, he was non-compliant with cardioprotective medications including statins and antihypertensives. He was rapidly transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he received appropriate thrombolytic therapy but made no meaningful recovery. After consultation with the Public Guardian, he was transitioned to palliative care and died on 7 September 2022. The coroner found that healthcare provided met acceptable standards with no preventable factors or opportunities for different care that would have changed the outcome.
